This is a Level 3 performance engine build on a 1974 2.7L engine for a factory 1971 914-6. We converted the 2.7L to Carrera RS specifications and installed KMS engine management system with individual throttle bodies, ignition coil packs and custom made headers. We then set up and ran this engine on our engine dyno.
We first evaluated and disassembled the engine. This evaluation helps us to determine the extent of build needed and also enables us to address the owner’s build preferences. All components were cleaned, then fully evaluated, tested and measured. On this engine, the crankcase needed to be align bored and updated. The rockers and connecting rods were all in need of reconditioning. All crankcase and crankshaft oil passage plugs were removed for proper cleaning of the oil passages. We then installed new plugs and micro polished the crankshaft. The intermediate shaft was replaced, as well as the timing chains, ramps, tensioners and sprockets. New genuine 2.7 Carrera RS Mahle pistons and cylinders were used and the crankcase was updated with ARP head studs and rod bolts. The pistons were balanced, as well as the connecting rods end to end. The cylinder heads were resurfaced and new valve guides were installed. Then all valve seats were cut on our Mira precision valve seat cutting machine from Switzerland. New performance valves were installed and valve lengths were set. New valve springs were pressure tested and spring heights were set. Deck height and compression ratio were checked and adjusted. The intake manifolds were ported and matched to the cylinder heads and all engine tin was repaired and powder coated. All bearing clearances were checked and recorded. Upon assembly, we measured and recored all fitment and clearance specifications.
We installed the KMS engine management system, individual throttle bodies and crank fire ignition system and mapped in the fuel, ignition and cold start systems. Below are the specifications of this engine after set up and break-in on our engine dyno.
Hp & Torque Specifications
Our 2.7L 911 Carrera RS Spec Engine w/ KMS: 234 hp at 6,800 rpm and 205 ft. lbs. of torque at 5,500 rpm
Stock 2.7L 911S Engine: 175 hp and 195 ft. lbs. of torque
Stock 2.7L 911 Carrera RS Engine: 210 hp and 188 ft. lbs. of torque
After the dyno session, we changed the oil, took an oil sample, re-torqued the cylinder heads, adjusted the valves and went over engine set up. The owner was given a maintenance interval protocol to follow for proper care of the engine during the remainder of the break-in period.
The end result of this Level 3 performance build with KMS engine management, is a very smooth, reliable street/track engine that is turn key. KMS has great cold start, throttle response, RPM pick up and works great with today’s ever increasing ethanol fuels.
The dyno test was performed on a Go Power Dynamometer with Land and Sea Data Acquisition Software. The Go Power dynamometer records in DIN hp.
